Teens and the Law
Teens who have run-ins with the law present special problems the teen, their parents, and their attorney must take into consideration.
While nearly any problem can be overcome, the first step in doing so is being aware of what these problems and hurdles entail.
Traffic
Most teenage drivers and their parents must be aware of the higher standard the law places on teenagers to drive safely. Under Georgia law, any four-point ticket any person under 21 years old results in an automatic license suspension. This includes some speeding tickets, reckless driving, aggressive driving, and unlawfully passing a school bus. Convictions for any of these offenses results in a license suspension.
Moreover, for drivers under the age of 18, an accumulation of four points or more within a 12 month period also shall result in a suspension of the license. There are many pitfalls encountered by teen drivers, however, with the proper guidance, these pitfalls can be avoided and licenses can possibly be saved.
Drugs and Alcohol
The use and abuse of illegal drugs, as well as the use of alcohol by people under 21 also carries many dangers, including but not limited to driver’s license suspension, heavy fines, incarceration, and other consequences, including denial of federal financial aid for colleges and universities. As with traffic offenses, these some or all of these consequences can be avoided with an experienced attorney, knowledgeable in the ways of the court system.
Sexual Offenses
Lastly, it is important for everyone to be aware that any kind of sexual contact, however limited, with a child under 16, even by other teenagers is a very serious offense and must be avoided entirely. Violation of these laws can, and frequently does result in lengthy incarceration periods.
